“How are you?” is probably the most common question you’ll be asked in English. Go beyond the simple answers and learn to express your physical and mental state with vocabulary, expressions, and idioms. You’ll learn positive expressions like in the pink
, full of beans
, and negative ones like out of sorts
, and losing my grip
. We’ll also cover a lot of vocabulary to talk about your mood, such as exhausted
, anxious
, depressed
, and many more. Your conversations will be much more interesting once you learn to express this wide range of physical and emotional states.

ulises81
thanks, it was very interesting lesson that gave me lots of examples to practice my English. So what about the meaning of this phrase “my mind gone blank”? Does that mean not to remember?
zdenda
Hi zdenda — thank you for your kind comments :-) Yes, if you say “My mind has gone blank” it means you can’t think of anything to say, and/or you’ve forgotten a word or a detail. It can happen if you’re tired, or stressed, or feeling uncomfortable for whatever reason.

Professor Gill:
It´s been a clarifying presentation since cuban speakers of English are generally tied to the most common ways to answer that important question, object of your presentation. These fresh vocabulary words and expressions can significantly help us to react differently in facing the question: How do you feel?
Ican now teach my undergraduate and postgraduate classes different ways to reply in that case. Thanks a lot. I really enjoyed it.

I liked this lesson. The expression “full of beans” definitely makes sense for a Brazilian man like me, because black beans are the main ingredient of our “feijoada”, the most popular Brazilian dish. Besides, beans are rich in iron.
Regards from Rio de Janeiro!
